AI Agent Development Path

From tool calling to multi-agent collaboration — build AI that gets work done

App dev experience required ~2 months (1–2 hours/day) 8 steps

Path goal

Finish able to design an agent's toolset and workflow, orchestrate complex flows with LangGraph, understand the MCP protocol, and build agent apps with evaluation and security awareness.

Who it's for:Developers with LLM app experience who want to go deep on agents

  1. Step 1: Nail the LLM app foundation

Be fluent with API calls, function calling and structured output — the ground agents stand on.

💡 Read the Function Calling chapter of the OpenAI docs closely.

  2. Step 2: Understand agent design patterns

Study planning, reflection and tool use, and build judgment about agent capability boundaries.

💡 Building Effective Agents clarifies the workflow-vs-agent boundary; Lil'Log's agent deep-dive is required reading.

  3. Step 3: Tool calling and MCP

Learn the standard way to give models external tools, understand MCP's client/server architecture, and run an MCP server yourself.

💡 MCP is becoming the industry standard — the course and SDK repos are the best entry points.

  4. Step 4: Workflow orchestration

Build stateful, looping, human-in-the-loop agent flows with LangGraph, or compare OpenAI Agents SDK and CrewAI before choosing.

💡 LangGraph's checkpointing and human-in-the-loop are production necessities.

  5. Step 5: Low-code agent apps

Build agents visually with Coze, Dify or FastGPT to validate multi-step task scenarios fast.

💡 A low-code canvas is the most intuitive teaching tool for agent orchestration.

  6. Step 6: Multi-agent collaboration

Study AutoGen and MetaGPT's multi-role designs and learn when multiple agents help — and when one is enough.

💡 Multi-agent is no silver bullet; solve it with one agent plus tools first.

  7. Step 7: Local models and ops

Set up a local agent playground with Ollama + Open WebUI as a step toward private deployment.

💡 Local models plus MCP tools are a common combo for privacy-sensitive scenarios.

  8. Step 8: Evaluation, security and the frontier

Build an evaluation habit, learn about prompt injection and other risks, and track progress via papers and communities.

💡 The Agentic AI roadmap repo is a good reference for a 12-week systematic plan.
